Destroyer Named For 'Father Of Aegis'
BATH (NEWS CENTER) -- For only the third time, a Navy Ship is named for someone who is still living.
The DDG 108, USS Wayne E. Meyer is complete, built by the hands of Maine's shipbuilders at Bath Iron Works. Meyer is considered the 'Father Of The Aegis' the defense system used on dozens of ships.
The Aegis system allows ships to intercept missiles and other ships at a greater distance than ever before. This is the 31st Destroyer in this class to be built at Bath Iron Works.
