John Adams - the Miniseries

HBO is going to make a miniseries out of David McCullough's fabulous book "John Adams". I just read about it over at "Boston 1775". Jen and I were watching the History Channel presentation on Horatio Gates. It's part of their "Washington's Generals" series. One of the commentators was John Maass. John blogs over at "A Student of History". I found "Boston 1775" by way of John's blogroll.
Here is the entry that caught my eye.

Hollywood websites are reporting that the HBO miniseries adaptation of David McCullough's John Adams biography will star Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti.

That's good casting. Giamatti could easily be made to look like Adams, and he's got the eager little popping explosivity that comes through the lawyer's diaries. Back in college, I had the pleasure of seeing Giamatti in several undergraduate plays; I particularly remember a production of Ionesco's Rhinoceros. He was great.

The Running of the Muslims!

(Context/background - Sunday my mother was doing the Globe crossword puzzle - they buy both Sunday papers, although I regularly protest giving the Morrisey-Avenue-bowtie-bum-kissers any money - and the clue is about cotton fabric and my mother says "muslim". Jennifer protests, how can cotton be religious? My mother says "no the fabric". They go back and forth, finally my mother spells it M-u-s-l-i-n. They are telling me the story and Jennifer is saying she has never heard of muslin. I say I have. She yells "spermologist!" Which is a different running joke about collectors of useless facts or trivia. So, now for us it's "Muslims in muslin!")

Countdown to Armageddon

Countdown to Armageddon was a special Jen and I watched on the History channel. I don't know when it was on, we DVR everything now. We watch almost nothing live (that will change when Jack is back on 1/14/07). So Jen and I got more laughs out of this show. It had scientist explaining the seven things that would most likely destroy the earth or civilization. We had an idea what they would be talking about so we kept trying to guess number one. I said global warming, she wondered if Al Gore would show up. Jen got the "V"! Jen said no wonder some people get depressed and kill themselves over this stuff. Out of the 7 disaster listed, 6 destroy not only civilization, but the planet becomes inhabitable. They had first responders on from some town in the Midwest (you know me, if it's west of Worcester, it's hazy) explaining what they'd be facing if the supervolcano under Yellowstone (Jellystone as Jennifer said) Park went. Well after they explained it.....who wants to survive?
So I vote for an avian pandemic. I think it would actually be good for the planet. I know that's cold....but I am mean. For those who survive there would be a lot less overcrowding and pollution. With most of the other disasters there's nuclear winter or the ocean has the pH of battery acid.
They had ordinary people explaining what they would do if they found the world was going to end (if scientists could give you the timeline of an asteroid or the progress of the sulfuric ash in the air hitting covering your city). We laughed with some answers, agreed with others. But we pretty much agreed that world governments would never let scientist tell because there would be chaos. So, my conclusion, whatever it is you would have done, do it anyway. You never know. That's what the nuns always taught us. Live each day like you might meet Christ that night.
Although when the bird flu comes, I'm going to be hard pressed to decide where to wait it out. I want to be with my family and take care of them. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind being with the Princess' Grand Vizier. He is completely prepared to survive. If only I could get m family to go there with me. I'm not any closer to deciding than the last time I had this discussion. Maybe I'll have to flip a coin.

For his naval service, Gerald Ford earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with nine engagement stars for operations in the Gilbert Islands, Bismark Archipelego, Marshal Islands, Asiatic and Pacific carrier raids, Hollandia, Marianas, Western Carolines, Western New Guinea, and the Leyte Operation. He also received the Philippine Liberation with two bronze stars for Leyte and Mindoro, as well as the American Campaign and World War II Victory Medals.

Finally realizing that this was a major offensive, Eisenhower sent the Airborne divisions refitting after Market-Garden to take Bastogne and Saint-Vith. The 101st Airborne, whose defense of Bastogne would become legendary, arrived by truck just hours before the town was cut off and surrounded, supported by units of the 10th armored. “Visualize the hole in a doughnut,” the 101st radioed SHAEF Headquarters in Paris, “That’s us.” Bad weather grounded the Allied air forces and prevented resupply.
They were to hold the town with little supplies and few tanks or vehicles. A store of flour in a Belgian warehouse fed the 101st with flapjack pancakes. American GIs retreating from the German advance stopped and joined in the defense. Artillery was set up in the center of town to give the defenders support anywhere along the lines, and from their arrival on December 18th until the day after Christmas, the 101st beat back German attacks. So why is this wanton behavior worth the hazards?
"Evidently, one important reason is to generate diverse offspring, something that produces a colony that has higher disease resistance than a colony with offspring from just one father," said Cornell University biologist Thomas Seeley.
Seeley and North Carolina State University entomologist David Tarpy found that a colony fathered by more than one male was better equipped to fight off the infectious American foulbrood disease.

"I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran."

My response?
Hey you moron! There are (and have been) Muslims fighting and dying in the GWOT. You disgrace them with this statement. I am horrified that there is an R after your name.
I thought twice before I mentioned this because I normally feel that this sort of behavior is best left under the rock it came from. However, in this case I am toooooo angry. Even before you revealed what an ignorant bigot you are, I supported Rep. Keith Ellison's right to use the Koran at his swearing in ceremony.

A better and more eloquent response came in the form of an editorial in the Roanoke Times.
"Aaah, values and beliefs. Would those include hypocrisy? Goode's constituents should now ask: How can one swear to uphold the Constitution while denying its protection to all Americans?
And Ellison is an American, born and raised in Detroit before emigrating to Minnesota to attend law school. His faith doesn't define his citizenship, and Goode should be embarrassed to equate the two.
He might wish to get his xenophobia checked before returning to Washington."

Tony Blair Is In Dubai....

....I am madly jealous! Life is so unfair! *I* should be in Dubai! This couch, (we had it pushed back against the window more) is where I should be sitting and typing right now. In Dubai it's 1715 as I write this. Dinner should be cooking in the kitchen you can see to the left. I should be showered and relaxed after a lovely day spent up by the rooftop pool, shopping in the souk and wandering the city. Today's high in Dubai was 72. That would feel nice wouldn't it SouthieBoy?

John Kerry Disrespects African American Woman

This is my turn at MSM style writing. I have a provocative headline which will prove somewhat of a leap when you read the story.

From the Boston Globe December 16, 2006.
Senator John F. Kerry yesterday defended his decision to meet with the president of Syria next week and said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice did not try to talk him out of the meeting when they met face-to-face earlier this month to discuss his Middle East trip.
Bush administration officials have said they warned Kerry that his trip to Syria -- and those of two other Democratic senators -- harms US interests and sends the wrong signal to President Bashar al-Assad of Syria. The administration accuses Syria of fomenting violence in the Middle East.

So, let's see.....John Kerry goes to meet with Assad even though State says it's a bad idea. He goes against the wishes of State and defends it saying they didn't tell him *not* to go. Kerry is putting his own judgement above that of the State Department (imagine if Jendayi Frazer went into the Senate Chamber and cast Senator Kerry's next vote!). He is overstepping into the executive branch. State is run by Condi Rice. Condi is an African-American woman...........so I say this means John Kerry doesn't respect African American women.

My actual feelings about Kerry and others (Dodd, Specter, Nelson) meeting with Assad.............two words..........Logan Act.
Some will be reminded of Kerry's 1970 trip to Paris to meet with representatives of the North Vietnamese.

It's About Time for a MG Rick Lynch Post

Here are some Sunday offerings from the "Major General Rick Lynch Fan Club". You can put his name in the "search blog" window in the upper left corner for the other 19 entries, lol.
"NATO: Rewarding Service in the Alliance" This is an article that Rick wrote earlier this year with Lt. Col. Phillip Cuccia. The Princess is not interested in men who are not smart. Rick has a B.S. from the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), an M.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. (How could I have missed him when he was in Boston!!!!!)
Many times when discussing movies and movie stars over the years, I have expressed enthusiasm by stating "I would sit and watch (fill in the name of favorite movie star) read from the phone book!" Often I was speaking of John Wayne or Sean Connery. Now we can add to the list........Major General Rick Lynch!!!! In this video Rick is shepherding his soldiers in the 3rd ID.

Half Assed Sunday

Last night I was driving the drunk bus and by the time I crawled into bed it was 0230. Consequently, this morning I hit the snooze button 27 times. I thought about not going to CCD, after all it was the Penence service and other teachers could cover for me. But I went. I was late for Mass and CCD and worse I wasn't showered (not my usual MO). Thank goodness I went, I was the only teacher who showed. I guess everyone had that idea.
I went home and started cleaning the house. Life with teenage boys is no fun when it's time to clean the bathroom. I felt like Cinderella. The point of cleaning the house was to make room for the tree. I never got that far. Everything I went looking for wasn't where it should have been. I had to send Frank to Jennifer's to beg a roll of papertowels. I need a replacement bag for the vac. I'm still not ready for the tree.
Then I went to Jen's to make baked goods for the neighborhood Christmas party. My cookie pizza was too soupy and couldn't be cut properly and Jen's brownies are over done. We're a pair!
I can't catch a break.

John Kerry's Search

Over at Military.com they have a story about John Kerry, the junior Senator from Massachusetts (to my ever lasting mortification). Seems Senator Kerry is going to Iraq to meet with soldiers. You know, the ones who aren't offended by his joke. He claims in the article that soldiers he has met with here have laughed about the joke with him. So now he is searching for soldiers stationed in Iraq who will laugh about it. Good luck with that! I know plenty who were laughing at you, but none who were laughing with you.

I read about this guy over at the Castle. I liked what he had to say. So did Bill Kristol on Fox News Sunday. I am a little behind on my television yelling (when I watch political shows there is lots of talking back).
We cannot appease our enemies and we cannot continue to cut and run when
the going gets tough. As it stands in the world right now our enemies view
America as a country full of queasy people who are inclined to cut and run when
things take a turn for the worse. Just as the Tet Offensive was the victory that
led to our failure in Vietnam our victories in Iraq now are leading to our
failure in the Middle East. How many more times must we fight to fail? I feel
like all of my efforts (30 months of deployment time) and the efforts of all my
brothers in arms are all for naught. I thought old people were supposed to be
more patient than a 24 year old but apparently I have more patience for our
victory to unfold in Iraq than 99.9 percent of Americans. Iraq isn’t fast
food-you can’t have what you want and have it now. To completely change a
country for the first time in it’s entire history takes time, and when I say
time I don’t mean 4 years.Talking doesn’t solve anything with a crazed people,
bullets do and we need to be given a chance to work our military magic. Like I
told a reporter buddy of mine: War sucks but a world run by Islamofacists sucks
more.

He's Back.......

John McCain is once again the number one man in my heart (well, besides SB). We've been through some tough times and I was pretty upset with him. But I'm over it. He's won me back. Watching him during all this ISG business............I'm a McCain Girl again.
On troop levels:
Some members of the Armed Services Committee hold views contrary to the group's recommendations, and Sen. John McCain, who advocates doubling the number of U.S. troops in Iraq, grilled the chairmen on their report.
The Arizona Republican, who has said the U.S. won't win in Iraq without upping troop levels, said he disagrees with the report's assertion that troop levels can't be increased "because we do not believe that the needed levels are available for a sustained deployment.

"My studies and figures show that they are available for sustained deployment, at least in order to get the situation under control," McCain said.
On talking to Iran & Syria:
McCain also expressed problems with the notion of sitting down with Iran and Syria, saying, "I don't believe that a peace conference with people who are dedicated to your extinction has much short-term gain."

Dennis Miller

I have always thought he was funny, but he has a tougher time of it because he is conservative. Anyway, he was on Fox last night. His point on the subject of Iraq and the ISG pretty much mirrored my own. We need get tough with the insurgents and we can't leave till we mop them all up. The worst thing we can do is to look weak. I am often frustrated by the ISG conversation because I feel it has reduced the discusion to "Leave now", "Leave later". How about "Take the gloves off with insurgents"? At one point he mentions that he "came late to the party, some people "thought it was GO time after the Cole", he joined after 9/11. I was down Jennifer's, in the kitchen, making cookies and other treats for todays family Christmas party. I yelled into the front room where Jennifer was making centerpieces (the TV between us) "I know those people!", meaning SB. She yell back "You are those people!" I laughed, yes I am. I thought about it for a minute and yelled back "Me? How about we? We are those people!".

Let's stop discussing timetables and start discussion ROE.

Jeane Kirkpatrick Passes Away

Former U.N. Ambassador has passed away at at age 80. Ms. Kirkpatrick was a woman of many accomplishments, most recently a senior fellow at the AEI. I admired her anti-communist stand back during Reagan's administration.

Is Jimmy Carter A Liar?

Well, I know I disagree with lot's of stuff he says and he peeves me to no end, but even I am surprised at this charge. A former aide is on FoxNews this morning discussing historical inaccuracies in the new book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid". Dr. Kenneth Stein has resigned his position with the Carter Center over this. He says there are inaccuracies, ommissions, and distortions. Carter has always been in my mind and the minds of others, a Palestinian sympathizer......I am a supporter of Israel. So, of course, we have a fundemental disagreement. But to find out he's lying to forward his agenda, wow. To misquote UN resolutions is silly. Those sorts of things are easily caught by other historians and political science wonks. So Dr. Stein has called him out on it. Carter responded with an Op-Ed in the LA Times

Carter has said at Simon and Schuster's website.
"The bottom line is this," Carter writes in an online excerpt posted by his publisher." "Peace will come to Israel and the Middle East only when the Israeli government is willing to comply with international law, with the Roadmap for Peace, with official American policy, with the wishes of a majority of its own citizens -- and honor its own previous commitments -- by accepting its legal borders. All Arab neighbors must pledge to honor Israel's right to live in peace under these conditions."

I think it's the last line that matters, the rest is just crap. I think Carter is abusing his authority as a former POTUS to push an agenda and disguise it as a historically accurate book. No, I won't be reading it.

West Loch Disaster

On Sunday morning, May 21, 1944, 29 LSTs readied for the invasion of Saipan, were nestled together at six berths. On May 21, 1944, at 3:08 p.m., an explosion blossomed out of LST-353. The explosions continued, damaging more than 20 buildings shoreside at the West Loch facility. For 24 hours fires raged aboard the stricken ships. In all six LSTs were sunk and several severely damaged. Dead were 163 men and 396 were wounded. There were many acts of heroism that day and many smart decisions saved other ships.
Jen and I caught a History Channel special on this back on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. It was billed as the other Pearl Harbor disaster. It was very interesting and I was struck. As someone who is kind of up on this stuff.....I had never heard of this incident. That was the point of the special, that even after all these years, the disaster was largely unknown. Partly because at the time we did not want Japan to know the extent of the disaster.

This Is Something We Need More Of

Ordinary Americans connecting with troops. Connecting with men and women in Iraq and becoming invested in their being successful.

After sending some cans to her 28-year-old son, Shriver enlisted the help of two priests and posted notices in her church and its newsletter. From there, the effort took off, with money and Silly String flowing in. Parishioners have been dropping cans into donation baskets.

This is from a story over at Military.com on creative uses for Silly String and one mother's efforts to get Silly String over to the troops. I have read about it over at The Castle when Laurie of Soldier's Angels New York posted about it. Anything that helps the troops is great. But what I want to point out is the line "Parishioners have been dropping cans into donation baskets." These are people who may not even know Mrs. Shriver or her son. They may not even know anyone in the military. This is in a very small way the equivalent of WWII metal scrap drives. It involves those who are on the sidelines. It's small, but it's a very good thing.

There is no way to sugarcoat the situation in Iraq except to say that what the American people THINK is happening there does not reflect the reality of what is actually occurring. Perception is reality in this case and if the war is perceived to have been lost here where the decisions are made, then like Vietnam, the successes and progress we have made so far don’t count for much. I am not interested in global opinion, elite media spin, or the inane advice of another blue ribbon panel. The US military is f#cking owed its opportunity to finish what it was ordered to start. Nothing else matters, because as Charlie Rangel says, nobody in this country has any connection to the military anyway so why should they care if we want the job done right?

December 7th


The more I learn about WWII in general and Pearl Harbor in specific, the more surprised I am that the Japanese ever attacked us. Yamamoto came up with the idea of a sneak attack, but he had no faith that Japan could win a long, protracted war. Many people believe he said "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." Historians doubt that he ever actually said this, but it probably does reflect his thoughts about the war. He did actually say on a number of verifiable occasions "I can run wild for six months...after that, I have no expectation of success."
The Reluctant Admiral relates that "Yamamoto alone" (while all his staff members were celebrating) spent the day after Pearl Harbor "sunk in apparent depression." He is also known to have been upset by the bungling of the Foreign Ministry which led to the attack happening while the countries were technically at peace, thus making the incident an unprovoked sneak attack that would certainly enrage the enemy.
In the end he was right. Midway, the critical naval battle considered to be the turning point of the war, did indeed occur six months after Pearl Harbor, ending June 7th, exactly 6 months later.

The Boston Police Department

From today's Boston Globe, which once in a great while has something worth reading.
Hub officer gets a hero's welcome home
Terrence "Shane" Burke wanted a quiet reunion with his Boston police family last evening.
He would be met at the airport by his parents, visit his South Boston precinct, and in a few weeks return to a Texas military hospital to get a permanent prosthesis for his left leg, part of which was blown off by an insurgent's bomb in Fallujah while he served as a Marine sergeant.
His fellow officers would have none of that.
Instead, they stopped traffic in South Boston to ensure Burke received a hero's welcome. He and his family were greeted at the station house by about 50 Marines, some from his company, and about 150 Boston police officers on foot, motorcycles, and horseback.
An American flag, bathed in light and suspended between two Boston fire engine ladders, hung high above West Broadway. A crowd of South Boston residents turned out, as well as the young children of several officers.
As several officers played the Marine Corps Hymn on bagpipes, on- and off-duty officers alike lined up and saluted a smiling Burke, who used crutches to walk to the station doors.
"We wouldn't miss this," said Officer Matt Morris, who works the overnight shift in Mattapan and who attended the Police Academy with Burke. "He's a tough kid."
Mayor Thomas M. Menino and new Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis III greeted the Burke family as a police photographer and a phalanx of television cameras recorded the moment for posterity. "He's a hero," the mayor said. "A Boston police officer goes over there, doesn't ask any questions . . . to protect our freedoms."
Burke, 28, did not speak publicly before going inside the station to spend time with fellow officers.
He was overwhelmed by the welcome, Superintendent-in-Chief Albert Goslin said later.
"He's unbelievably thrilled by the reception he got," Goslin said. "He wants quiet time with people who mean a great deal to him, who he's been communicating with."
Officers have also organized a party for Burke at Florian Hall for tomorrow night.
Burke's family is well known in Dorchester. T. J. Burke , his father, was named honorary Dorchester mayor for the annual parade. Burke served in the Marines for four years before entering the Police Academy last year. And when his Marine buddies went to Iraq while he was an officer patrolling South Boston, he volunteered to go as well last December.
Burke wrote letters to friends in the department from Iraq and the rehabilitation hospital. "I've come to realize people are people no matter where you travel, and sometimes a smile and a wave can change someone's perspective," he wrote in April.
Five months later, he suffered serious burns and lost part of his leg when a roadside bomb tore apart his Humvee.
Boston Fire Lieutenant Jim O'Brien, who was attached to Burke's unit as a Navy medic, said the Humvee was burning, so he and other Marines had to drag Burke and another injured Marine away while under heavy fire from insurgents.
Burke had two collapsed lungs and was struggling to breathe, said O'Brien, who said he tied a tourniquet on Burke's leg because he was losing blood quickly.
"I couldn't tell him his leg was gone," he said. "You start talking about something else."
Last night, O'Brien and other men from Burke's company finally got to see their friend after months apart. O'Brien said he hugged Burke and said, "Good to see you, bro ."
Dorothy Faherty, Burke's mother, said he was so eager to see his fellow officers that he wanted to go straight to the precinct from Logan International Airport.
Burke's fellow officers couldn't wait, either. About a dozen of them stood in the lobby and outside the district station several hours before his scheduled arrival.
Officer Dudley Hill, who supervised Burke when he was a rookie, said Burke is beloved by everyone at the precinct.
Hill said that, like many officers, he was distraught when he heard Burke had been seriously injured. "When I first heard the news, my heart was pierced," Hill said.
But Burke's upbeat attitude about his injuries has kept other officers optimistic. "Terry is the type of guy you'd want on all your radio calls," Hill said. "He's one of those guys if you're in the field and you call him, you know he's coming."
Hill said it is unclear whether Burke will be able to return to active duty, but if anyone can do it with a prosthetic leg, he can. "The type of guy Terry is, I can just see him doing it again," Hill said. "He's a great cop."
Goslin said that another officer serves on active duty despite having a prosthesis. He said he saw no reason Burke could not serve as well.
Burke has to return to Texas to get his prosthesis, Faherty said, but he could not wait any longer to come home to Boston and see his friends. "He said, 'Ma, next time I'm back, I'll have my leg,' " Faherty said.

So The Other Day In Work........

Pat listens to me deal with an insurance company on the phone. After the phone call she asks me if they are going to pay the claim. It's no skin off my nose if they don't, because the patient has already paid and they know it's unlikely the insurance company will pony up. But that's just the kind of place we are. We'll try anyway. I tell people all the time to "Let us try to bill this to insurance because you are going to pay enough out of pocket for your (spouse, parent, sibling friend, etc)". Sometimes I am successful, sometimes I am not. Senior citizens fall into two catagories in my experience, "Medicare owes me this, I worked hard all my life." and "I don't want to bother anyone, can I just write a check?" So anyway, I usually manage to get the second group let me take a stab at it. I am not always forthright with insurance companies, because they are not always honest with their subscribers. Lot's of insurance companies tell subscribers, "Don't worry, we'll take care of everything!" When what they really mean is that they will throw deadlines, forms, copays, deductibles and documentation requirements in front of you and if you can scale those hurdles, we'll pay you as slowly as we can. So, back to Pat. She questions me and it is slowly revealed that I was not quite telling everything I knew about the patient to the insurer in an effort to get something covered. She exclaimed "You lied!" I told her I prefer the way a former Secretary of State put it...........

Bolton Resigns

What a shitty start to the day.

Bush Accepts Bolton's U.N. Resignation

Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his temporary appointment expires within weeks, the White House said Monday.
Why?
The White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. The incoming chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, said he saw "no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again."
Why?
Point to one thing he's done wrong. All the things they said would go wrong, didn't.
Perino said that among Bolton's accomplishments, he assembled coalitions addressing North Korea's nuclear activity, Iran's uranium enrichment and reprocessing work and the horrific violence in Darfur. She said he also made reform at the United Nations a top issue because the United States is searching for a more "credible" and more "effective."

That's what I nearly had in the car on the way home from my parents. Most Sundays after Mass, CCD and hanging with my parents for a bit, I am driving home just in time to listen to "Meet The Press". If I hear something that piques my interest I can pull it up on the DVR later. Most of the time, I am content with just hearing it. Thank God I wasn't watching, I might have thrown something through the TV!!!!! Tim interviewed that nitwit Jimmy Carter about his new book "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid". I had already heard him discuss this on Charlie Rose and I am well aware of his anti-Israeli bias. Blah, blah, blah...no humanitarian aid...yeah, that's right, we won't reward you while you refuse Israel right to exist. Tough. You still hungry? Step into this century. Be civilized. Otherwise, rub some dirt on it and be quiet. No surprises. Then Tim asks "What if President Bush were to call you....does he call you....?" (I'm paraphrasing here, as soon as the transcript is up on Real Clear Politics, I'll get complete quotes). So Carter says "Yes" I don't know what he said after that. I was screaming "Liar ##$^*&%$% lie #$%&&$#$$# liar#^&*$#%%" at the top of my lungs, alone in my car, staring at the radio.
To save my own life, I managed to switch over to the Irish music on 'GBH.
People say to me "Maggie, you're a Bush girl." and I am. I still have two bumper stickers on my car. "I Stand with President Bush" and "Bush Cheney". That doesn't mean that I don't find fault. That doesn't mean that there are not many policy decision I am not happy with. But if this is true. If "W" has EVER called the peanut farmer....for any reason.....that would be the thing that wounded me most grieviously. I don't know if I could ever get over that.

Here's something that always aggravated the living shit out of me about the Pilgrims.

...in 1658, Plymouth Court ordered that any boat carrying Quakers to Sandwich be seized to prevent the religious heretics from landing. A year earlier, Quakers in Sandwich had established the first Friends' Meeting in the New World. Magistrates in both Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies were alarmed by Quaker teachings that individuals could receive direct personal revelations from God. To protect orthodox Puritanism, the courts passed a series of laws forbidding residents from housing Quakers. Quakers themselves were threatened with whipping, arrest, imprisonment, banishment, or death. But driven by conscience, some Quakers repeatedly returned to Massachusetts to preach; four of them, including Mary Dyer, went to the gallows before a shocked King Charles ordered an end to the hanging of Quakers in 1661.

The Pilgrims came to America for religious freedom and were so intolerant of others religious freedom. Don't get me wrong, I know how aggravating it is to have someone try to "help you get right with God", but hanging? Of course it doesn't happen much in Boston, lol. I am already with the majority. It's funny to be on this subject at this moment. I am on my way to the shower to get ready for Mass and CCD. Don't worry, as I've said before, 4th grade CCD is Old Testament, so I end up teaching history and geography. I'm not damaging young minds.

And, of course no one needs Mass more than a vengeful, belligerent tart like myself!

No, it's not Wednesday (obscure reference to a Prince Spaghetti commercial). How about a little post wager negotiation? While I appreciate your generous offer and I'm sure your honey liquer is fabulous (come to the next Milbloggers conference and we'll have a taste test!), how about this.........take what you would have spent on postage and whatever is in the seat cushions (as the father of a two year old I don't expect you to find much) and send it to "Operation Santa"? You can read all about it over at the Castle and over at Andi's. After all, when I drink it gets messy......plus I am susecptible to marriage proposals and that's not good.

The Armorer is suggesting that everyone who pops by his place make a $5 donation (he gets a ton more traffic than the Princess). I've made my donation, but I have to make up for invading his personal space in Seattle. So I'll do a little begging over here.

Anthony has challenged me to a bet in the post below. He has a cool thing to wager.

"I have several bottles of a honey liquer I make for the holidays. It is based on a 300 year old recipe handed down thorugh my Lithuanian neighbors family. If I lose, I'll humbly send you a few bottles. In addition lets say the loser has to post the flag of the winner's branch of service on their blog for the remainder of the month of December."

I don't have anything unique like this. Regular readers know I am completely without talent and my life is full of nonsense. What can I put up in return?

**NOTE** Anthony is a nice young man who is married and has a young child. He wandered into this blog by way of Op-For. He is decidedly *not* a candidate for the Rotation. So suggestions such as the one made by WereKitten will not help me.

The Rotation is a group of men who vie for my attention with varying degrees of success.
Next, this plea was crossposted over at the Castle and sent out in a blast email.
You are completely correct, my friends both have faith in the Navy and took great pleasure in throwing me under the bus....thump....thump.
So far, my favorite is Ry over at the Castle : "Maggs, he's offering a homey kind of gift. So give something back in return. Either something made out of M&M's glued together with sugar......"
Ry clearly understands the extent of my abilities and where my interests lie.

The Wager
My first thought was Legal Seafoods. SB & WereKitten seconded the idea....actually SB was pushing for me to wager a whole lobster dinner because he has absolute and complete faith in Navy. I do as well, but I think that's just mean, cause Army is gonna make sure you never get it. I am putting up this.

Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him that new Ford pick-up. Tomorrow's Army-Navy Game

Navy jets doing game flyover will be rooting for Army

VIRGINIA BEACH — Two of the four Navy F/A-18 jet pilots performing a ceremonial flyover for the start of Saturday’s Army-Navy game in Philadelphia will be rooting for the Army.
Blasphemy?
What’s more, they’ll be wearing West Point class rings.
A sacrilege?
The pilots – who claim they bleed Army green beneath their Navy uniforms – are Lt. Cmdr. Paul Campagna and Lt. Cmdr. Bobby Baker of Strike Fighter Squadron 86 out of Beaufort, S.C.
Flying alongside them will be Lt. Cmdr. Mike Amos and Cmdr. Sara Joyner, executive officer, of Strike Fighter Squadron 105 based at Oceana Naval Air Station here.
Amos and Joyner will be wearing their Naval Academy rings, Class of 1993 and 1989 respectively.
Their allegiance is unquestionable.
As for Baker and Campagna, “we’re definitely wearing Army class rings,” Baker said Thursday.
“That is where we went to school. We’re proud of the fact we are West Pointers. … We are Army at heart.”
Campagna and Baker were originally Army helicopter pilots but switched services when the Army began getting rid of some older aircraft and the Navy was having a pilot shortage, Baker said.
They had never flown airplanes, so they went through Navy flight school in Pensacola, Fla.
Amos said the four have become great friends. Baker was once assigned to VFA-105 as well.
“They might be the only two Army pilots flying Navy F-18s,” Amos said.
“Ends up being an honor to do this. What makes it special is to have a couple of Army guys flying Navy jets. I hope irony is not lost on that.”
All four pilots are scheduled to fly over Lincoln Financial Field at exactly 2:31 plus 30 seconds.
They will land at Willow Grove, Pa., about 20 miles away, then will drive to the football field.
They hope to arrive by halftime.
“Given a choice, we’d like to sit on the Army side,” Baker said.
But he’s seen before what cadets do to a midshipman who sits on the wrong side.
“They don’t just take his hat. They take the whole midshipman. I think we’ll sit in the press box.”


My allegience is unquestionable.

Uncle Jimbo 'Splains It All

This morning as I was getting ready for work and sparring with someone in email, I was listening to FoxNews (there's a wicked shocka). They had a story about "W" explaining his thoughts on "graceful exits".
"I know there's a lot of speculation that these reports in Washington mean there's going to be some kind of graceful exit out of Iraq," he said. "This business about a graceful exit just simply has no realism to it at all."
I was very heartened. They had Bill Kristol on for color and he was also bouyed. Then I pop over to BlackFive and Uncle Jimbo put it all very well.
