Wow, I didn't see this coming. I posted here, that I thought the choice was inappropriate in light of the Pope's feelings about war in general and US involvement in Iraq in particular.
I love the song.
It was done very well yesterday.
I love and respect the Pope and have listened carefully to his views.
I fully back our involvement in Iraq. I support OIF. I support OEF. I've got the coin, lol.
I feel it was inappropriate to perform that hymn with the line "as he dies to make men hole, let us die to make men free" for the Pope. I feel the hymn glorifies war. That can be good and it's well done in this case. It's still inappropriate considering the guest of honor. "Hey, we agree to disagree. I'm for the war. You're against war. Happy Birthday. Thanks for stopping by. Glory, glory......."
Not a good call, in my opinion.
Since I feel it's wrong to criticize if you have no alternate plan to offer.......Better call? "Amazing Grace".
OK, so sitemeter tells me that I have had an uptick in traffic related to this. Interesting.
Then I go over the Phibian's place (sometimes there are naked women posted, lol). Anyway, he posts about the ceremony and mentions the Hymn. I point out in the comments that I disagree with that choice and the most interesting discussion on Roman Catholicism comes about. Really interesting. There is a second post about Monsignor Georg Gänswein. the posts are good, the comments complete them.

Hmmm... perhaps you're right. Maybe it wasn't appropriate for Pope Benedict's visit. I certainly don't know the protocol for such an occasion. But you do have to admit that the Army Chorus did an excellent job of it.
