This Day in Navy History

May 4, 1942
The Battle of Coral Sea, the first carrier vs. carrier battle, begins.
Last year, Steeljaw Jaw Scribe did an excellent job on this. He focused on May 7 & 8th.
This is an interesting read about three Sailors who were awarded Congressional Medals of Honor for actions during the Battle of Coral Sea.
The USS Russell was attached to Task Group 17.5 (USS Yorktown CV-5) during the Battle of the Coral Sea. She earned 16 battle stars during World War II and was decommissioned just after the war ended. The name however lives on and you can read about the USS Russell (DDG-59) and her Sailors here.
