WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Retired Navy Rear Adm. Wayne E. Meyer, regarded as the father of the Navy's AEGIS Weapons System, passed away Sept. 1.

Often times we wait too long to honor people. This time however, the Navy was in time and on target.

Last October I was invited up to Maine for the christening of DDG-108 & missed it. But you know who didn't miss it? Rear Admiral Wayne E. Meyer.

RADM Meyer provided LEADERSHIP.

It is a quality missing from many in senior positions. There is a reason he never picked up much deserved third star: he put the fleet in front of politics.
