The attitude was that the Cold War (which, comparatively, very few were called to fight - as though it was on another channel) was over and denial was the means to enhance life in the "Feel Good Society". Even the intelligence community slipped into this reverie; like a cluster of elite dinner clubs.
Yet, I can remember panels comprised of people like Armand deBourchgave, Steve Emerson, Lawrence Egelburgher (phonetic spelling) and John Loftus trying to say the threat was real. We might just as well have been whistling Souza marches at a Woodie Guthrie memorial.
John "Lurch" Kerry, when criticizing his own country for failing to see ourselves as others do - or some dribble to that effect, made a point for the wrong reason.
It's our vulnerability, stupid!
We have been at war for some time and our vulnerabilies have been incrementally exceeding our defense.
