"Can't we just drop stuff?"
That's what she said at breakfast this morning. Not that she really cares. She is more heartless than I am about this stuff. She and I watched the History Channel's "The True Story of Black Hawk Down" and she was furious when the Somali's turned on us. "That's it!" she exclaimed. "We're not helping anyone else! No more. Let them starve. I don't want to hear another word about Darfur. Ever!"
But just speaking conversationally, she asked why we couldn't just drop stuff on them. So apparently, someone at State had the same thought
The United States is considering air-dropping food aid and other relief supplies to victims of the devastating cyclone in Myanmar, even if the closed regime resists, a U.S. official said Thursday.
The option is not ideal, but is being studied by the U.S. and several other countries as a last resort if Myanmar's military leaders continue to limit outside aid and expertise that would help millions of people affected by the storm, said Ky Luu, the director of the U.S. Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance.
However, the SecDef and my friend Mike the CJCS said "No."
Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he can't imagine dropping relief aid into Myanmar without the military junta's permission.
Another U.S. official says the U.S. is looking at that possibility anyway, to help victims of a devastating cyclone in Myanmar.
Gates says the military is moving aircraft and ships into place to help deliver humanitarian supplies once permission is granted. But he says he can't imagine doing it without the Myanmar government's go-ahead.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen says it's a matter of Myanmar's national sovereignty.

Jen also disputes the guy from this post. She says our shrimp comes from the eastern seaboard coast of the United States.
Jen is wrong. Your shrimp is indeed primarily sourced from Thailand and other Asian nations.
ReplyDeleteJen's probably thinking of *flounder*. Sure, one's a flatfish and the other's a crustacean, but you can broil, fry or stuff either one, so that's prolly where the confusion arose.
