President Bush nominated Vice Adm. Mark Fitzgerald and Rear Adm. James Winnefeld on Friday to take the top two Navy leadership positions in Europe, according to a Pentagon announcement.
If approved by the Senate, Fitzgerald will earn a fourth star and become commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Allied Joint Forces Command in Naples, Italy. Fitzgerald is currently director of Navy staff at the Pentagon. He will replace Adm. Harry Ulrich in command in Naples. Ulrich’s future plans have yet to be announced.
Vice Adm. John Stufflebeem was nominated to replace Fitzgerald earlier this month. Pending congressional approval, Winnefeld will earn his third star and take Stufflebeem’s current job as commander of 6th Fleet and deputy commander of Naval Forces Europe.
Fitzgerald is a naval aviator, who commanded Carrier Group 8 during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and 2002. Earlier in his career, the admiral led the first Navy strike on Baghdad during Operation Desert Storm.
Right now, Winnefeld serves as director of joint innovation and experimentation at U.S. Joint Forces Command. He is also an aviator who has served with VF-24 “Fighting Renegades,” the Navy Fighter Weapons School, and the VF-1 “Wolfpack.”
Defense Secretary Robert Gates also announced July 26 that Rear Adm. Philip Greene will take over for Rear Adm. James Hart in command of the Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa. Greene is currently director of policy, resources and strategy at Naval Forces Europe. Hart’s tour is slated to end in February, according to Lt. Cindy Moore, a Navy spokeswoman.
Time to watch the ripples, boys and girls.

ReplyDeleteMy boy is Roughead, SB had Ulrich. Not only did Ulrich not get the nod for CNO.....in the current game of musical Admirals, Ulrich has not seat.
